Vortex of Magic and Music – Queen West Music Festival

Last year I arrived in Toronto from Los Angeles to discover the Queen West Music Festival, (coincidentally), if there is such a thing. It was one of those pleasant surprise’s discovering talent the purpose of my move back to Canada.

On Queen Street West is a store called Magpie I discovered two designers shot a video and guess who saw it? the legendary man of music Prince and next thing you know these designers are making wardrobe for Prince for his Welcome to Australia Tour.

The magic did not stop, it was on Queen West I ran into and became friends with Canadian film director Bruce McDonald who invited me to come see his film Hard Core Logo 2 about a punk band.

Walking to Chippy’s the fish and chip place I ran into two ladies who became friends of mine one of whom owns the recording label in Vancouver File Under Music with some very talented bands.

My first encounter with the organizer of the Queen West Music festival Krista Grant was at the drake while she was carrying some shots for the band at the Drake Hotel to say thanks guys for helping out. So was I going to miss this music festival in the vortex of magic? What do you think? It was not gonna happen.

There is no better place to come chill then Trinity Bellwoods Park, it truly is the vortex of magic, you just have to be open to it. My friend Josefine a health crazed Swedish model, mathematician, brain’s with beauty joined me especially since I told her my friend Jessica Mitchell was going to play.

On a sunny day in the park with great people the bands played, while Jeff and Krista ran around as if waving their magic wand making sure all went well. The magic was at play, as these images will show you.

Little Bit of Country by Grand Canyon at The Drake Hotel

In Los Angeles, I lived in the hills above Sunset and could go see several bands in one night from the House of Blues, to the Viper Room.

Since arriving back to Toronto from Los Angeles I have been wanting to go to The Drake Hotel and see what’s up. It’s taken a while to get there but I am glad that it happened on an evening when a friend of mine the very talented Jessica Mitchell was opening for Grand Canyon a country band comprised of Courtney Farquhar & Chris Seldon.

Never rush things in life, that is my motto, things will happen when the universe wants them to happen. For me I was not meant to walk into The Drake Hotel till this moment, where magic was at play with the music of Grand Canyon and the voices’s of Courtney and Chris blending like fine aged whiskey.

From the moment I walked into the The Drake, I was pleasantly surprised and instantly helped and guided by Sonia at the door. A musician whom I had seen play live was tending bar. My friend Jessica Mitchell was the opening act, and talented photographer Michael Patrick a very good friend had also arrived. The lighting in the room was perfect and I was at home at The Drake.

Courtney Farquhar & Chris Seldon are two very nice human beings, and when you listen to them perform it will sound as if they have been together forever yet they have only been together as Grand Canyon for a year and a half. Chris talked to me about country music and connecting with the audience, and this duo connect. If you have been around country music you will find everyone is just nice pleasant and Courtney and Chris are no different. The Grand Canyon is a MUST see if you are in the city, you really don’t want to miss the magic they perform on stage at The Drake on any given Tuesday.

The Grand Canyon is all about keeping the magic of music alive and they perform magic because they believe that magic is real and dreams do come true at the right time. Courtney Farquhar & Chris Seldon’s time has arrived. Have a listen from last night as they perform ‘The Departed’.

Lana Del Rey on American Idol very tasty!

Lana Del Rey and her management team are pulling their ballsiest stunt yet — the singer is scheduled to perform on ratings giant ‘American Idol.’ According to Idolator (via Prefix) the embattled crooner will tape a segment for an upcoming episode, though it hasn’t been announced when it will air.

Tickets to a taping of ‘Idol’ this coming Thursday reveal that Del Rey’s name is printed alongside scheduled performers Demi Lovato and Creed followers Daughtry.

Not only will Lana Del Rey be hitting American Television again, this singer, songwriter already has a sandwich named after her. Not many can say that. The sandwich was created by Toronto, Clafouti and it’s been tasted by Canadian singer, songwriter Jessica Mitchell who liked it.

While Lana Del Rey is may tape March 15 for American Idol, Jessica Mitchell perhaps the only singer to have tasted Lana Del Rey will also be performing the same evening at the landmark El Mocambo.

Here is a sample of everyone, the Lana Del Rey sandwich, music from both the performer on American Idol, and live performer Jessica Mitchell March 15 at El Mocombo the singer that eat Lana Del Rey. It’s all here on My Name is Khan.

Music of Jessica Mitchell:

Mouthful of Lana Del Rey at Magpie

There is no other person who has come out of nowhere in the last 6 months become famous and then have a sandwich named after her. While Lana Del Rey is from Lake Placid, New York, it was not New York that came up with the sandwich. London had Lana Del Rey front and center at Mulberry and it was in the United Kingdom that the sandwich was invented, it was not London that came up with the idea.

Thanks to social media, the idea emerged from Twitter a suggestion from Ireland and taken up by me to make it happen. It’s what American’s do, make things happen while others dream. In Canada it’s a small percentage who can act like American’s and among the few so far I have encountered are Magpie Fashion always ready to move and try new things, and Clafouti Toronto.

Magpie fashion which has been busy designing for Canada’s Got Talent judge Measha Brueggergosman also designs from time to time for Prince the King of Funk who once lived in Toronto. Magpie was back designing for Prince and invited a few people over to try some wine from South Australia, called Ass Kisser provided by Cottonwood Wine and the now famous mouthful sandwich created by Clafouti Lana Del Rey.

Canadian singer, songwriter was on-hand to try it as well while also getting fitted for her upcoming show. Have a look.

Burger’s Priest upon landing from The Grammys 2012

Hitting the ground running, and running hard was the order of the day. Arriving to Beverly Hilton to only discover that Whitney Houston had died, the media surrounded you, the party that you came for hosted by Clive Davis was an uncertainty then on, and the buzz all over the place was about Whitney Houston.

The evening no one really eat, for me it was back to my stomping ground Mr. Chow and again this was a light affair. Richard Branson was in full party mode, and while a serious attempt to get the party going everyone was still reeling from the shock.

The Grammys was all about running around catching up with old friends. The Foo Fighters had been with me in Toronto at the Ritz Carlton one night so it was time to talk it up with them, my friend who looks after McLaren car which run you $750,000 base price, was putting on her Pucci dress and ready to hit the party of home town man Deadmau5 needless to say no food was consumed, but everything else was. Sleep, who needs sleep. After all will do plenty of sleep when I am dead so why bother, it’s over-rated anyway.

Jumping on the flight at crazy mad early hour, all I can now think of is home Toronto and grabbing a burger at Burger’s Priest in my old hood on Yonge and Lawrence where I grew up, made my first black and white movie and organized concerts.

The crew at Burger’s Priest is also cool, Alex there plays drums and is working on getting his band together, and it’s a spot where I always run into someone who’s gone to my high school Lawrence Park, not to mention that Shant Mardirosian, who started it is a cool dude. The food well, it’s simple and the burger’s are the best in town. Recording artist Jessica Mitchell who I interviewed prior to the Grammys say’s the bruger’s are great and soon you will meet another recording artist Megan Bonnell on My Name is Khan thinks these burgers are the bomb. The only time to sit is on the plane flight back catch up on some sleep and dream of landing and chowing the burger voted third best spot to eat a burger.
