This Diwali, experience love like never before as we follow the journey of Ayan (Ranbir), Alizeh (Anushka) and Saba (Aishwarya).
Barfi! is going to be the Indian entry for the Foreign Language Film Oscar this year? A movie picked out of a shortlist that included Paan Singh Tomar, Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Deool, Eega, Vazhakku Enn 18/9 and Akasathinte Niram.
Now I know there is a great deal of debate about this entry from India to the Olympics of filmmakers awards the Oscars, it is mounted with utter beauty on the screen. It’s a cinematic gem. It had for me the visual effect of a Rothko painting.
While the film like most Bollywood fares is long, it reminded me of the one element that attracted me to Artist last years Oscar winner, that element of love.
Barfi is a love story found in silence, infinite, fathomless, terrifying, uplifting, unknowable, gorgeous silence. This is not a silent film.
Barfi! is a Indian romantic comedy film written and directed by Anurag Basu. It tells the story of “Barfi”, a mute and deaf boy in Darjeeling, West Bengal and his relation with two girls, one of whom is autistic. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz in lead roles.
While there are more knowledgeable voices than mine who can talk about this entry on behalf of India to the Oscars, I can say one thing. Priyanka Chopra is a star!
Irish people will probably pelt me with rotten potatoes for saying this but you know something Priyanka Chopra showed me something, that took me to fleeting moments of the brilliant performance by Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot. This girl is going places, it’s time to break out of the box, let that blood swoosh through the veins Priyanka, take that death-defying leap, and cross the bridge, because you girl, you can act.
Indian filmmakers, don’t really need the Oscars, they are doing just fine. But while much is being said about this film, it’s subject of a mute, deaf or autistic who have ever since I can recall been treated poorly, or simply forgotten,in India.
I have a funny feeling about this film, it may just sneak up on the Academy members and grab them and in doing so open the door for someone I consider to have that gift that can make it in Hollywood. Priyanka Chopra.
A SCENE in upcoming Hindi film “Ferrari Ki Sawari” showing the coveted four-wheeler being pulled by a bullock cart has angered bosses at the sports car manufacturing company.
Well if your Ferrari was to break down in India that is probably how you would get towed.
My Ferrari broke down one day leaving Monaco just when I was changing lanes thereby blocking everyone trying to leave Monaco. Embarrassing, yes especially when you have scooters honking at you and people yelling in French, ( it may sound nice but you know it’s just all bad).
It is said that the top bosses at Ferrari have asked for a screening, but production house Vinod Chopra films are yet to show the film to them.
“Vinod Chopra Films are in touch with the Ferrari office in India and their head quarters and we don’t know the details. As of now there is no screening arranged for them,” said a spokesperson of the production house.
The film, directed by debutante Rajesh Mapuskar and starring Boman Irani and Sharman Joshi.
Well I will just have to ask someone at Ferrari what all the fuss is all about.
“Delhi Belly” is like discovering vodka in your water glass than water in your vodka glass. It’s refreshing. Electric skies over ratty store fronts, it’s what India is about. The film has this windswept clarity, that shit can happen, and shit happens. This film is talent at work, great direction and great cast. Don’t buy a ticket to the circus and then be surprised to find an elephant. This film dishes it out in a Quentin Tarantino Hollywood style except this is Bollywood and these film makers are serious and take risks. Bravo!! guys! These kind of film makers get me excited. Lights, camera, action it all here at My Name is Khan.
IIFA Awards came to the right city at the right time and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. It also gave me time to reconnect with Gulshan Grover the biggest bad guy of bollywood who I first met in Cannes. The city has pulled out all the stops, and to stand in the crowd and see a sea of smiling faces young and old all having fun that is what bollywood movies are all about. Everyone is into it. One person informed me that he has not had a drink in 4 hours, “ouch!” At the Royal York the drinks are being chilled for the after party with liquid nitrogen the party, the fun, the dancing goes on at My Name is Khan and it never stops, next stop India and it’s first ever F1 race and the party at Amber Lounge. It’s going to be Toronto in India, the adventure goes on at My Name is Khan.
Toronto girl Lisa Ray is Indian Polish, Canadian Bollywood star, and model. She has been electrifying the local crowd while entertaining Hilary Swank and Cuba Gooding Jr. who flew in from Hollywood. The party is about to rock as Bollywood and Hollywood meet in Hollywood North, right here at My Name is Khan a new era in film making has begun.
