My Name Is Khan – Fafa Khan

My Name is Khan is all about the journey of discovery while traveling a road far from the bleakness of daily routine and surprisingly by accident falling upon what is best termed the accidental discovery.

Fafa Khan is such a find, and perhaps the discovery would never have been made if it had not been for the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth in Montreal, Prince and his Welcome 2 Canada Tour, Magpie fashion and running into Kate Good who would become a friend and as they say the rest is history.

Fafa is a delight to talk to and is no porcelain doll. Fafa is multi-talented and her flair for the creative has a wide range, from music, photography, fashion, and art. Here is the interview with the delightful straightforward Fafa Khan.

1. You are very creative person with many interest’s how did this come about ?

I’ve always been artistic my entire life. Constantly drawing and dancing as a kid I always had a need to do these things naturally. In high school I was voted head of the Art Department and once I graduated I then studied Fine Arts, Visual Arts and Creative Arts. I had the freedom and time to create my first collection of paintings at 18 as well as my first vernissage. Since then I have had three of my own art shows, 2 gallery exhibitions and 2 auctions for my artworks. I now study Art History at Concordia University in Montreal. I did this in parallel to other opportunities that came up working with photographers, videos, music, graphics and teaching dance I really enjoy anything creative and artistic.

2. What do you like doing the most or do you like everything creative that you do. Modeling, Photography, DJ ?

I get asked a lot what I will concentrate on the most in the future, to be honest I can’t do one thing without the other. Modeling opportunities came to me as favors for friends and then photographers started to notice. I essentially wanted to learn more about photography behind the camera so I modeled and learned at the same time. I already knew how to edit and photoshop pictures so I did that after the photoshoots. A lot of my paintings are photography inspired so that’s where I see the connection.

As for DJing I actually remixed songs for my dance classes and had to keep up with current music before I knew how to spin. I then got the offer to DJ at supperclub/bar type place and after got noticed by other clubs. To answer your question I can’t actually choose one thing I like the most since I love and need them all because they depend on each other.

3. How has your cultural family background added to your creativity?

Having a Pakistani mother and a half Japanese half Finnish father I can tell you my father is calm and collected and my mother is strong and opinionated. They are a perfect match and I guess my artwork shows a lot of contrast and complimentary colors. My parents are also engineers and have a structured background; I tend to mix geometric and abstract shapes together. They had influence on taking “art” as a future, since they are both so business oriented it made me work harder to prove being an all around artist can become a sufficient career.

4. As far as travel goes where would you like to go?

I’ve actually been lucky enough to travel the world due to my parent’s professions; the company they work with is international, so I had the opportunities to travel to places all around Europe, Asia, South America etc. The next future stop is hopefully Tokyo since I’m part Japanese I think it would have a great influence on my work.

5. What do you like about Montreal and London two cities that you spend time in?

London is mainly for family purposes, I see it as a second home, but it’s also a place I can pick up on newer things happening in the entertainment business, fashion, music. Etc that they receive first before people in Canada. Montreal is a perfect mix of Europe and Canada, everyone speaks several different languages and you will see for yourself most people are from all different kinds of nationalities. It’s also one big family, everyone knows each other here. I admire our months of winter because when the sun finally comes out people here appreciate it a lot more, which make Montreal summers amazing and full of things to do. Personally my work also varies in style depending on the time of the year, so I do like the fact we get all four seasons.

Talent in Canada is everywhere. Talent in the world is everywhere. Fafa Khan, makes the world dance.

Show Time Prince and The Queen !

The Audi arrived in flawless fashion to the Grande Dame of Montreal hotels the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth which first opened it’s doors in 1958, where the only Beatles whom I have never met John Lennon and Yoko Ono had their legendary Bed-in for Peace. Upon informing the valet of the valuable goods the Audi was transporting, he picked up the phone and three of his co-workers arrived guarding the Audi as if it was a armored car. The garments bags loaded on the rolling rack were protected by the hotel staff like Fort Knocks. Why not after all the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth had seen it’s share of rockers and actors from Bon Jovi, Kanye West, to Juliette Binoche and Anne Hataway. Prince and his bands new wardrobe from Magpie fashion was being escorted to a private gold floor to remain there till such time as it was under lock down in a car headed for the venue. Once the wardrobe was securely sent off to the venue, it was time to head off to Les Voyageurs for a bottle of Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon armed with my two iPhones fully charged.

The count down to show time neared the text message’s and the e mail’s began pouring in the most important text message had still not arrived, that is when you are thankful that the Fairmont has staff like Kate who was on duty and kept the nerves from fraying, the after party, the fittings, and show time was nearing. Kate Good kept everyone smiling and another bottle of Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon arrived with a small cheese plate and steak tartare. The bottled opened and the text arrived “wardrobe at venue”, then came the call “Tim, Prince loves it, can you text me the number for your designers he wants to call them”. The legs of the wine now began to look very good, in the comfort and sanctuary of the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. The adventure never stops at My Name is Khan.

Rapscallions on Rocksmith with California Dream

Prince was in town to kick start his Welcome 2 Canada Tour, and if you did not know it Prince is the only artist to have the credits, producer, composer, lyric’s, singer, and performer as he played all the instruments on his first album while 21 years of age. Times now have changed and if you are a young aspiring musician and want to learn to play guitar you are probably going to end up learning it on Rocksmith for Xbox to the tune of my friends band Rapscallions. The best time I had during the Toronto International Film Festival was hanging out with Chris Clemence and doing a photo shoot with Toronto photographer Michael Patrick. It’s rare when you have everyone on the same page, and Chris not only went crazy full of creative energy he also donned on the fashion of Toronto’s own cutting edge fashion house Magpie the exclusive designers to visiting rock stars. Yes, Prince is a legend the master of funk, pop , jazz and rock he has inspired so many and when I spoke to Chris about Prince his response was “epic”.
The Rapscallion are the next big thing, and I am telling you this because they just did a show in Vegas and what ever happened in Vegas did not stay in Vegas. The word was out, the band rocked it with the creative energy, it’s just pure free energy, and to top it all off they are really nice dude’s who love to have fun, make music their passion and like to roll with whatever!, just like true California surfer dude’s would with a wave, just go with it. They’re a California group mixing rock, rap, and funk. Prince should have this band as his opening act, and let me tell you that would be cool, but what would really be dope if Prince and the Rapscallions jammed, that could be just be an all time high. The band has smooth up beat guitar riffs, killer bass grooves, and some great vocal performances by vocalist Matt Still. My buddy Chris well his bass groove’s are wicked. California Brain the single on Rocksmith is a freaking great song, I live the lyric’s in my dream’s “California is all I see when I close my eyes”. This song is so well done. It has the awesome rap vocals during the chorus singing over the smooth lead guitar lines, and another great bass riff matching a great drumbeat from Adam Fisher. The chorus is great and the classy solo provided by guitarist Dario Forzato is done well. I can see these guys explode, China, India, Germany and United Kingdom but then again the world is shrinking and if I was Prince I would call these guy’s up and do some mini gig’s. Prince listen up my man, let’s do a show with these dude’s in Vancouver what do you say?
