Pope Francis urged hundreds of thousands of people at this mass in Ecatepec to jointly solve the issue of drug-related violence and turn Mexico into a “land of opportunity,” where “there will be no need to emigrate in order to dream,” and where they will “not have to mourn men and women, young people and children who are destroyed at the hands of the merchants of death.”
During an open air mass in Ecatepec, just outside of Mexico City — although within the metropolitan area –, the pope asked, “Brothers and sisters, let’s get this into our heads: You can’t talk with the devil. You can’t talk with him because he will always defeat us.
He went on to say that, “Only the Word of God can defeat him. We have opted for Jesus and not the devil.”
The pontiff held a massive outdoor mass that nearly 300,000 people attended. He was warmly welcomed by the crowd after he arrived from Mexico in a helicopter. Thousands camped overnight since Saturday in order to have a good place to see and listen to the pope.
