Timing is everything. If ever there was the right time to be in Toronto it was in the year 2011. The year that Bollywood descended upon the city like the migration of geese except this migration was from Mumbai to Toronto. Lady Gaga made several appearances in the City and King Khan himself making two appearance all heating up towards the Formula Once race in India. On June 9, 2011 Goo Goo Gaga right here on My Name is Khan you heard it from me that F1 India was going to be a high octane, glamour, glitz affair and if Lady Gaga was thrown into the mix it was going to be a party. I encouraged everyone to get involved anyone that wanted to be in India this was going to be the right time. I love women. I respect women. I thank god they are around as it makes life worth living. Women are central in everything that is India, from the goddesses, to the women Arjumand Bano Begum (Mumtaz Mahal) the inspiration of the jewel of Muslim art in India the Taj Mahal. Yet this is the same India where I once made a film with Merchant Ivory The Deceivers staring Pierce Brosnan, who battled the followers of the goddess Sati, from which came the word suttee a religious funeral practice among some Indian communities where widowed woman either voluntarily or by force and coercion would be immolated herself on her husband’s funeral pyre. It was outlawed in 1892 yet it happened not far from where we had been filming. India is still a place where women are a liability. It is a country full of contradiction and this is exactly the reason why Lady Gaga is important to India. It is important for Bollywood to realize that the new India loves their bollywood star’s and they are also aware of show stoppers like Lady Gaga. Everyone in the world knows what Lady Gaga stand’s for and while no one will say it I can tell you her reception and the media frenzy has left some feeling a bit uncomfortable. Screw Hollywood it’s all about Bollywood. No not quite yet but a union is about to start, and women like Lady Gaga may change in some small manner the life of the women who toiled the land preparing for Formula One, the women who carried off the trash, the women who’s family sold their farm land for a race track. In India there is no escape from reality it stares you in the eye when you wake up, change will be slow but it is coming and for music more collaborations will follow. King Khan himself who came to promote his film Ra One in Toronto did so only to return to India for the F1 race and was moved by this women from New York, who give’s it her all when she performs, who’s time came and she arrived in India at the right time with the right event and touched so many. Timing, it all about timing, and My Name is Khan, Lady Gaga, and SRK King Khan all were at the right place at the right time.
