Action! The Kitchens for Tiff12 Toronto International Film Festival

I started to document the dance that takes place in the kitchen of Chef Brad Long’s Cafe Belong last year during the Toronto International Film Festival.

This year for Tiff12, I selected those restaurants where you will most certainly have great food, meet the team at these restaurants who are really a lot of fun, with great chef’s, and most importantly great food.

Daily, you’ll see the kitchens at work while films get screened, so when you are hungry, these kitchens will look after you.

I had my own place in Monte Carlo, and my all time favorite place is still La Colombe d’Or (St-Paul-de-Vence, France). So yea, I have standards.

All the spots are meant to let you explore Toronto, and I know everyone at these places, so if you go you will really have a great meal and good time.

Toca – Ritz Carlton – Toronto

The kitchen is great and the team and chef’s of the Ritz Carlton are catering the very exclusive Ball to which a private jet thanks to Bombardier is flying in with stars. They would not be doing it if they did not know food. ( Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner )

Magic At The Ritz Montreal – Canadian Grand Prix

My Weekend with McLaren, continued with the hospitality of the luxurious and friendly Ritz Carlton Montreal.

The Ritz Carlton has always been my favorite hotel in Montreal ever since I was growing up. It recently opened a week prior to the Canadian Grand Prix and this is perhaps the best time to see the hotel at work. The pressure is on.

Jetting in early I was given a warm welcome from the hotel team and in desperate need for a coffee I was escorted into what I call the magical kingdom managed by the renowned Executive Chef Daniel Boulud and his restaurant Maison Boulud and introduced to Rachid Mallis. Rachid greeted me with a big smile and assured me he will make for me a coffee “strong” personally.

It was quite when I arrived the coffee was yes, strong, and every detail was looked after by Rachid, the basket of breads, to the amazingly light and so good french toast. Cafe after cafe, slowly the beat picks the chefs arrive, the Executive Chef himself in arrives, and the pace starts to pick up. The team in the kitchen starts to move as if in a ballet. The very petite sommelier, she now busy carrying cases of wine and checking her inventory.

Monday after the Canadian Grad Prix and still on a high from the win by Lewis Hamilton and late night of parties I returned for more strong coffee, and this time Joe, and Rachid looked after me it was a day when Lewis Hamilton was pronounced King of Montreal and trust me the King will be staying at the Ritz in Montreal because I will tell him so. The Ritz delivers, for me they made the impossible happen. That alone speaks volumes for a hotel and it’s team.

King of Montreal the Ritz.

Chef of Champagne – Paris to Bombay, Dom Perignon Baby !

After receiving his chef training at Mumbai’s prestigious Oberoi Hotel, Vineet Bhatia immigrated to England. His work at Zaika then made him Europe’s first chef of Indian cuisine to be awarded a Michelin star.

How do you begin this exotic journey into the world of Chef Vaneet Bhatia and the King of fizz Dom Perignon? The women I know who are alluringly spellbinding and can enslave any man with their teasing sorcery with a wave of their hand as if it was a magic wand, start with a bottle of Dom Perignon and a luxury bath.
Karl Lagerfeld showcased his collection of Chanel Paris to Bombay in the splendor of a Indian Palace he also did a photo shoot for Dom Perignon. My dear friend from London Michelin awarded Chef Vaneet Bhatia was appointed to create a Indian dining experience for the King of fizz Dom Perignon. Fashion and Champagne go hand and hand, after all LVMH owns the champagne brand Dom Pérignon and beauty brands such as Louis Vuitton and Guerlain.
This has been the first time that Dom Perignon selected Indian food to feature for it’s Dom Perignon affair. Why not, if Karl Lagerfeld is doing it at Chanel and you have a Chef such as Vaneet Bhatia. To experience the food of Chef Bhatia is without question being on a magical train of old the Orient Express with provocatively clad women with a yen for food. It is an adventure. He is the King of Spice. He is constantly creating. Inventing. The food is a fantasy of taste. I have known the Chef for twenty years or so and all I can say, when it comes to Indian foods Chef Vaneet Bhatia rules. If you have not been to his restaurant in London Rasoi on Lincoln Street I urge you go, life is too short to pass this up. Bravo Chef. The adventure never stops for My Name is Khan.

What’s Cooking In The Hood !

Prince and his Welcome 2 Canada Tour is winding it’s way through Canada, Gun’s and Roses’s are zigzagging through the United States, while Cold Play will blow into Paris in two days. Waiting in Toronto to catch up with Prince’s last two show’s in Vancouver what is one to do except relax, eat, drink some great wine and that was the order of the day in my old hood, where I had grown-up. It was truly like going home at Richlee Ristorante resurrected by Chef Suthan Rasa. Richlee Ristorante is not a place where you are going to find long-haired, exotic, lonely well toned women to whom everyone is darling. No this is a place, that is a cozy sophisticated, comfortably warm that invite’s locals as well those visiting for the first time as if they are family. The restaurant has a rich selection of wall to wall wine to go with a variety of dishes created by Chef Suthan Rasa. Everything is prepared by the Chef in a small kitchen, reminding one that some of the best kitchens in the world are small kitchen’s such as in Malino, Rome, Shanghai, or New York. Would Frank Sinatra have dined here? This is so Frank Sinatra, and reminded me of one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Santa Monica frequented by Bono and Edge, same style, same feel, great food, great wine, and most important of all the people at Richlee have personalities which allow you the luxury to enjoy a meal in a leisurely manner. It was good to be in the hood after many years absence yet Chef Suthan made me feel like I had never left at all.

You Talk’n to Me! Chef Marco Pierre White in Abu Dhabi

I love Chef’s who think like this,

“Eating is one of the most important aspects of living. I like indulging. I like to eat one food at a time, to savor each individual thing.”-Marco Pierre White

Chef Marco Pierre White is considered to be the hottest finest master chefs that the United Kingdom has ever produced, and in Abu Dhabi you will find his restaurants in the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, if attending the film festivals or the Formula One race’s then stop in take the time and savor the food from the kitchens of this master chef.  All Chef’s are artisit’s and so expect them to behave as such and this old school rocker molded in the manner of Mick Jagger is just that, a rock star chef, who likes food, wine, women.  Two things are certain about Chef Marco Pierre White, he is talented, very talented, and he has personality.  If you meet a Chef without personality, please, please walk-out the food will be just like the Chef. In Super Chef at My Name is Khan you will only meet those who have the creative style to break the mold and innovate food sending your sense’s hurling into orbit of some distant planet.  Chef Marco Pierre White is also like Marlon Brando.  While Mick Jagger went googo, gaga over his knighthood, Kieth Richards or Ronnie Wood would just balk at it.  Chef Marco Pierre did the same, awarded the three stars of Michelin something no one had achieved in the United Kingdom Chef Marco Pierre renounced the award and retired from cooking. In 2002 he was named the AA Chef of the Decade.  This is my kind of guy.  Good films are not about Oscars it’s all about the passion for the art, from making films, driving F1 cars, music, being a creative director of a fashion house it’s the passion that propels one to keep on going.  The kitchen of Chef Marco Pierre White is constantly in flux, and always innovating.  Perhaps one day I can take you inside the kitchen of this master  Chef Marco Pierre White in Abu Dhabi on My Name is Khan.

Chef Mario Lohninger’s touch of Silk in Frankfurt!

If you were a silk spaghetti strap of a burgundy silk dress by D & G grafting the body of Heidi Klum, glamorous beyond belief, stylish, sensual, with startling golden hair, luminous, scintillating as she saunters into the Michelin star awarded Silk Bed Restaurant of multi-award winning Chef Mario Lohninger you would be in a dream. A dream it is when you go to Silk Bed Restaurant in Frankfurt, or so it was for me, the week it was awarded it’s Michelin star. Silk’s concept combines visual effects, and culinary indulgences with a third experience. Selected DJ’s playing silky lounge tunes that set the mood for the panoply of orgasmic creations beginning with an aperitif stimulating all culinary receptors that tease you, for the thirteen course dinner. This dream like culinary experience comes at the hands of  Gault Millau’s chef of the year 2011 Mario Lohninger as you float away with the food, the drinks, the music into culinary heaven.

The silk fabric has weaved it’s way from New York fashion week, to London, Milan and now Paris Fashion Week and Heidi Klum is no stranger to them, yet what a thrill it must be to arrive in your homeland, slip into comfortable slippers at Silk, and enter into the spherical ambiance as if in Roman or Asiatic time, stretching onto white leather couches, with cosy cushions. Everything at silk works like nature, in a rhythm all of it’s own seemingly effortlessly, as you listen, see, and taste. This is the first of a series of features on Chef Mario Lohninger during this Paris Fashion Week. So for those wanting to jump on a short flight from Paris to Frankfurt, you should do it, you will only live once, and while you have been looking at silk all week long you should take the time to experience the theater of the Chef, and the magic of his food. I did, I still have not forgotten the adventure as I discovered the magic of Chef Mario Lohninger as he assaulted me with culinary designs and innovations, the aromas from his roots Austria, France, Asia, and the America’s. The adventure of discovery never stops at My Name is Khan.
