As Global Ambassador for Om Magazine it gives me great pleasure to introduce this luxury, the art of time. Both online and in print it opens another world of fashion, that timeless piece the wrist watch. Recently an acquaintance of mine the Formula 1 impresario Bernie Ecclestone was mugged in London losing his expensive time piece. Next time Bernie will have a bigger time piece and this time it could become a weapon. A watch can be a captivating fashion item. I once walked into an office and the Chairman of the company was wearing a watch that captured my attention. He admired my Mont Blanc Meisterstuck LeGrande in 18k gold also used in the 007 film “Octopussy” , staring Roger Moore as James Bond. This was my very first barter deal, I gave him my pen in exchange for his Tiffany Breguet watch. Welcome to the luxury of time with Om and some of the people who have crossed my path and the wrist watches they have worn. The adventure of time begins at MY NAME IS KHAN.
How sweet it is, Champagne and victory. McLaren’s Knight in Shanghai was Lewis Hamilton. McLaren has been tweaking it’s car’s each race and Hamilton was confident that his team had selected the right tyres for Shanghai. Having made one more pit stop then Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. The win was thrilling as Hamilton overcame a pre-race mechanical drama and with his crew performing a ballet in the pit stop to perfection with rond de jambe at rapid speed against all the laws of gravity and with a quick succession giving him a fresh set of tyres. “It was one of the best races I have experienced,” said Hamilton. Red Bull’s Mark Webber, who started 18th was man and machine, grafted, with speed and skill charged to the front to finish 3rd behind his team mate Vettel, while the Knight of McLaren Jenson Button finished fourth. The win was a product of collaboration and the champagne flute’s will be overflowing at McLaren.
It had been a few years since I had a drink. While it was planned to commence in the very near future, with Charlie Sheen rolling into town on a private jet and the rockers Foo Fighters, it was time to throw in the towel and start at Bar Deq at the Ritz. Jasmine the knowledgeable bartender, the friendly, attentive servers at Bar Deq were ready to get the party started.
The evening for me at this oasis began slowly with the Chefs new creation a cubic watermelon champagne infused compressed salad. Not only is the salad presented in an instinctively artist manner it also tantalizes and refreshes the pallet. Those visiting from South of France, Tuscany, or LA, will feel right at home with this little teaser. As the tempo at Bar Deq picked up I observed the ballet being performed by Jasmine and the servers, who kept pace without missing a beat or loosing their smiles. It was time to step up the game. The next level was Belvedere vodka on the rocks and a dozen oysters from Tom Brodi’s TOCA seafood bar. The smell of the vanilla in the vodka hitting the nasal epithelial made me wonder why stop drinking at all. After all I am not planing to live forever. After a few more Belvedere vodka’s in limited supply at Bar Deq due to shelving space and having consumed the entire bottle it was time to move on.
F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel die fliengenden Deutsch and the Brit Jenson Button will be joining Vettel in the front row of the grid and his team mate Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg will make up the second row followed by the two Ferrari’s of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa. The knights of McLaren Jenson and Lewis feel the improvements in the car, Jenson stated, “it’s my best grid slot of the year. We’ve improved the car a lot and we should be happy with the P2.” While Lewis Hamilton had problems with the tyres last race commented ” I have a very decent set of tyres for the race”. Shanghai is a great city with great restaurants, clubs, especially in the Bund district which was a British settlement in the 1800s on the outskirts of the walled-city of Shanghai. Here the the place to stay is the latest luxury hotel The Peninsula Shanghai. While the Bund is great my preference is the Grand Hyatt Shanghai Hotel in the Pudong district. Reception for the hotel is on the 57th floor and the view from the 87th floor leaves you with the feeling of floating on a cloud. My favorite place to dine is Art Salon restaurant on Nanchang Lu 164, this is Matisse meets Shanghai if you were making a Hollywood pitch. Don’t rush your meal here, it’s supposed to be a leisurely affair and you can buy anything that catches your eye from the table, art, chopsticks, lamps or the chair you are sitting on. Tomorrow brings “Showtime in Shanghai” and it seems that the knights of McLaren Jenson and Lewis may soon present a challenge to Deutsch F1 supremo Vettel.
Is Sebastian Vettel “unaufhaltsam”? It would seem so. The rain held off in the closing laps as it became a battle between the German and the Brit Jenson Button and Nick Heidfeld finishing third. It came down in the last remaining laps and the Perilli PZero’s. You can lay rubber, burn rubber, rip rubber, smoke that rubber, but in hot humid Grand Prix F1 in Malaysia, you better preserve that rubber. The Perilli’s again performed well and Vettel what can one say! ” I love what I do and I don’t think I could be happier at this stage”.The battle has only just begun and your strapped with MY NAME IS KHAN where it’s not about the money, money, the ka-chang, ka-chang, or the price tag, it’s just about the passion for adventure and discovery.
It’s countdown to showtime at the hot humid Sepang International Circuit, in Malaysia. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel will start of the race Sunday in pole position, followed by Lewis Hamilton, his team mate Mark Webber, Jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton’s team mate and Fernando Alonso in fifth spot. The gird girls are ready, as are the girls of Pirelli. If did not give Jenson Button enough thrills he will head off to Hawaii to compete in the grueling, demanding, Hawaiian Triathlon. COME ON MAN!! the torque is not enough for Jenson he needs the 1.5km swim, 40km bike ride, and a 10km run. “I’m really excited about this weekend. It’s going to be good,, and great to do it in this humidity as well” Jenson said about the race in Malaysia. I like Jenson and have had some good time with his father and have met all his sisters. But come on man!!! what next Tour de France? Jenson has completed the London triathlon twice. Now fight with Bull’s mate!
