Nico Rosberg pipped Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages of final practice to lead a Mercedes one-two ahead of qualifying for the British Grand Prix.
Hamilton had given the home crowd a huge boost after topping the timesheets for the majority of Saturday morning.
But the British driver, who is bidding for his first victory at Silverstone since 2008, saw Rosberg steal a march on him, underlining Mercedes’ seemingly strong pace this weekend.
Hamilton had complained he was struggling with his Mercedes on Friday, but the British driver appeared content with the handling of his Silver Arrows and could face a straight battle with his team-mate for pole later today.
The 28-year-old hasn’t started from the front of the pack at Silverstone since his inaugural Formula One season in 2007, and pushed the boundaries this morning, running wide at Brooklands in the closing stages of the session.
